Many years ago there was a tragic house fire on the north side of Carmi. Towns people and firefighters rushed to the scene to battle the flames. After several hours all that was left of Annie's home was a smoldering heap of ash and burnt timbers. An anguished dry went up as it was realized that none of Annie's children made it out of the house. They had all been burned alive in the inferno.

Carmi - WHITE COUNTY The Legend of Black Annie. Many years ago there was a tragic house fire on the north side of Carmi. Towns people and firefighters rushed to the scene to battle the flames. After several hours all that was left of Annie's home was a smoldering heap of ash and burnt timbers. An anguished dry went up as it was realized that none of Annie's children made it out of the house. They had all been burned alive in the inferno. For the rest of her life Annie was in mourning and wore nothing but black. Many times late at night Annie would be seen walking along the gravel road. At other times she would be seen hiding in the shadows of the treeline along the roadside, waiting for a child to walk near by. She would spring out screeching "my children, my children" while trying to grab the frightened child. Townspeople said that if Black Annie caught you, she would drag you off to pile of rubble where her house once stood. There is a legend that in the nearby woods, Annie would skin the children she had captured and hang the skins from a large oak tree. Annie would keep some of the skins and make a dress out of them. For many years, parents would warn their children not to stay out late or Black Annie would catch them and skin them.
